ABOUT STRIDE

STRIDE (Supported Training & Rehabilitation in Diverse Environments) is a non-profit, charitable, community based vocational rehabilitation program founded in 1983. STRIDE is the only Halton-based organization whose primary purpose is to serve the employment needs of individuals facing mental health issues.

STRIDE provides a comprehensive range of employment support options, which are responsive to individual needs.
A continuum of services is available, including:

  • Supported Employment
  • Rehabilitative Work Environments
  • Community Placements
  • Case Management

STRIDE is committed to creating opportunities for people facing mental health issues to gain meaningful employment. Families, doctors, mental health professionals, and community partners may refer individuals, or we accept self-referrals.

It has been estimated that eighty-five percent of people experiencing mental health issues are unemployed. Experience has shown that for many of these people, their lives can be transformed by something most of us take for granted - a job. STRIDE recognizes that employment and earning power contribute significantly to a person's sense of dignity, independence and quality of life.

Studies report that ‘work’ is a leading component in promoting positive mental health and leads to a more fulfilling life in the community. Employment increases the level of independence and speeds the recovery of individuals we serve. STRIDE provides a variety of meaningful work opportunities which form an integral component of the overall rehabilitation process.

Individuals dealing with mental health issues want to live and work in the community; however they must cope with barriers created by their illness including social barriers related to the stigma surrounding their illness. Over the years, much more effort is being directed towards assisting individuals with mental health issues to find, get and keep work. Increased employment opportunities for our clientele is a priority that has been clearly identified by clients, families, mental health professionals and government.

STRIDE has been very successful in its rehabilitation efforts. In 2008/2009, STRIDE provided services to 282 participants in our Rehabilitation Work Environment, and 236 individuals received Supported Employment services. 85% of participants agree that STRIDE has given them the assistance necessary to further their employment goals, while 90% felt that their involvement with STRIDE increased their ability to function in the community.

With expertise in the area of employment and mental health, STRIDE’s goal is providing the necessary supports that facilitate people’s attempts at finding, getting and keeping work. We work to improve the lives of persons facing mental health issues by offering the training and support necessary to improve employability and work readiness.
